British miners get tough with China

...Anglo American and Rio Tinto...will refuse to sign up to African joint ventures with Chinese companies unless they comply with Western environmental and human rights standards...A spokesperson for Anglo said: "All our joint ventures with the Chinese will conform with Anglo American's sustainable development and corporate social responsibility guidelines." A Rio spokesperson added: "We set ourselves high standards of fairness, integrity, openness and accountability, which underpin the way we manage the economic, social and environmental effects of our operations. We expect all our business partners to maintain similarly high standards, and are happy to work with them to help them adopt these." [refers to CHINALCO]
