Burma Refugees File Rights Abuse Suit In Belgium Versus Total

Four Burmese refugees have filed a lawsuit in a Belgian court against TotalFinaElf SA and its Chief Executive Officer Thierry Desmaret for crimes against humanity...It's the first of what may be many more cases against multinational corporations operating in developing countries, due to a controversial Belgian human rights law. The case stems from Total's construction of a gas pipeline in Burma during 1995-1999. Total is alleged to have used forced labor and lended "moral and financial" support to the Burmese military junta
