Bus Drivers Fired After Wage Strikes [Cambodia]

At least eight bus drivers from Phnom Penh Sorya Transportation company were fired…for leading a strike…About 80 drivers went on strike…demanding a $60 increase to their $120 monthly wages [and] numerous additional benefits...Nine drivers were subsequently fired for having joined the Cambodian Labor Confederation and participating in the day of industrial action…“Other drivers have been threatened that if they don’t leave the union, they will be fired too,”…[the head of the union] said…Chan Sophanna, general manager of Sorya Transportation, confirmed that eight drivers had left the company, but claimed only four were dismissed, while the other four left of their own accord…“[The company] has acted in accordance with the Cambodian Labor Law,” he said…
