Issues > Pregnancy discrimination > International standards

The right not to be discriminated against due to pregnancy is protected in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women article 12.2 (a) and in ILO convention 183 on Maternity Protection articles 8 and 9.  The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights article 10 states that special protection should be accorded to mothers during a reasonable time before child birth, and articles 2.2 and 3 prohibit gender discrimination.  Gender discrimination is also prohibited in article 3 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and other international standards.
