Canada: Meat shop to face lawsuit alleging its responsibility for E.coli outbreak

"Edmonton law firm is suing a Hutterite meat shop for allegedly selling pork products infected with E. coli", 27 Apr 2018

A local law firm has filed a $15-million class action lawsuit against a Hutterite meat shop believed to be linked to an outbreak of E. coli in the Edmonton area...“on behalf of the people who suffered damages as a result of buying or consuming pork products that may have been contaminated by E. coli,” according to a statement issued by the firm...Alberta Health Services issued a statement...linking certain pork products sold by The Meat Shop at Pine Haven Colony...to an ongoing outbreak of E. coli...Since the original outbreak was reported in March, there have been 37 lab-confirmed cases of E. coli, including 11 patients who have needed hospital care, and one person who has died likely due to the infection, say health officials...“With the number of people that have been involved, there’s likely to be some people that continue to have some long-term effects,” said Mallett...The Meat Shop at Pine Haven issued a statement...announcing it was co-ordinating with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency...[T]he ongoing outbreak of E. coli poses significant public health concerns and the lawsuit gives people who have suffered economic loss due to the recall and physical injury an opportunity for compensation...Allegations filed in a statement of claim have not yet been proven in court.
