Canada set to oppose UN native rights deal - Reopening of land claims feared in wake of declaration

Canada faces a setback at the United Nations today as the world body prepares to overwhelmingly approve a declaration aimed at recognizing land and other rights of indigenous peoples around the world... The Conservative government says the Universal Declaration of Indigenous Peoples' Rights is simply inconsistent with Canadian law... Grand Chief Edward John, speaking for the Assembly of First Nations, said yesterday in New York [that Canada] "...cannot present itself as a promoter of human rights internationally when in its own backyard it votes against the human rights issues of indigenous people."
