Canadian envoy invited to Udon [Thailand]
Author: Vincent MacIsaac, Nation [Thailand], Published on: 24 January 2006
Canadian Ambassador Denis Comeau has been invited to spend the night in a village in Udon Thani by one of the leaders of a group protesting against a Canadian company’s attempt to mine beneath them. Somyot Nikam said he was disappointed that not a single embassy official had visited the villagers during their five-year protest against Asia Pacific Potash Corp (APPC)’s [part of Asia Pacific Resources] effort to build Thailand’s first large-scale underground mine... APPC management has said that any potential environmental damage from the project can be prevented. The mine will create jobs in the area and greatly benefit the national economy, it says.
