Children to be brought back in school system [Fiji]

The Labour Ministry hopes to put minors who are working in sugar cane farms due to extreme poverty back in school. Ministry’s Child Labour Unit has found that there are children below the age of eighteen who are involved in cutting and loading sugar cane for their livelihood. Child Labour Unit – Manager – Atish Kumar says this mostly happens in rural areas. Kumar says…they’re also organising workshops in cane belt areas. Stakeholders, including Sugar Cane Growers Council, Fiji Sugar Corporation, the Sugar Ministry and the Cane producers Association were part of the workshop. Kumar is urging the sugar cane stakeholders to look into this issue seriously and help the Ministry to bring back students to school.
