Chile: Environmental authority orders definite closure of Barrick Gold’s Pascua Lama mine

After years of protests by local communities of Valle del Huasco (or Guasco), related to serious environmental harms caused by Barrick Gold's open pit Pascua Lama project, the environmental authorities ordered the definite closure of the mine and the payment of a fine too.  NGOs welcome this decision but underlines that the decision will not allow underground mining as the company has stated.
