China: Foxconn dormitory beds shared by 2 workers, raised privacy concerns

[Original article in Chinese. Title translation, and following summary of the article's key points, provided by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre.] Foxconn (part of Hon Hai), the Apple iPod manufacturer in China, was found to have allocated 2 workers to share the same dormitory bed due to its addition of one shift to its current two-shift day. Workers, mostly women, complained about the intrusion of privacy and the possible hygiene problem. A typical 6-person room has to accommodate 2 more workers. When the workers occupying two of the beds go to work, those beds will be used by workers who have just finished work from the other shift. More than 1000 workers have to share their beds and endure the measure for more than a month after which the management will have enough space for every worker. A Foxconn spokesperson claimed the measure was temporary while a new dormitory building was being renovated to accommodate all workers from the 3 shifts. He further explained the addition of the extra shift was a response to the excessive overtime problem at Foxconn.
