Coal and Corruption: The Battle for Gerze [Turkey]

The residents of Gerze [Turkey]...accomplished… to prevent…the Anadolu Group from conducting survey drilling for its proposed coal-fired power plant...[T]he events…represent...one battle in a war which has dragged on...for years…[T]he Platform for a Green Gerze [YEGEP]...[is] concerned about the pollution the plant would cause…[T]he...plant would be built...on top of a major source of fresh groundwater..., which the community fears could...become contaminated by the plant’s ash deposits. The Anadolu Group contends that the...new Erfelek Dam project…will solve the problem by importing fresh water from 20 kilometers away, but…[YEGEP says] this would...have detrimental effects upon local farming, rendering the soil unusable...In the fishing industry, this is coupled with concerns the plant might...raise the sea temperature of the bay…Anadolu Group…’s boss…signal[s] that the company is...investing in well-qualified manpower for this project…[refers to Coca Cola, McDonalds, Honda]
