Colombia: Mining company Cerrejón challenged over alleged human rights abuses

Coal mining company Cerrejón [part of Anglo American. BHP Billiton & Glencore] takes steps to improve its human rights record by reaching resettlement agreements with families displaced by its operations and addressing community representatives' grievances regarding the company's environmental and human rights impact. However, Colombian community representatives travelled to the UK to speak out against alleged human rights abuses at BHP Billiton AGM including relocations and access to water issues

“Colombians to confront BHP Billiton over community evictions at London AGM”

A Colombian delegation will grill BHP Billiton executives at their AGM over the mining giant’s environmental and human rights violations in Colombia. The AGM comes just weeks after the latest eviction of the village of Roche, near the Cerrejon coal mine. Further reports of threats and pressure at two other villages in the path of Cerrejon expansion have also come to light in recent weeks… The Colombians will also speak about their first hand experiences of the operations of Cerrejon Coal, jointly owned by London-­listed mining companies BHP Billiton, Anglo American and Glencore, at a public meeting that evening at the Institute of Education...

Colombia: Cerrejon coal announces settlement with last two relocated families to New Roche village

“Roche families and Cerrejón reach a final relocation agreement”

Cerrejón [part of Anglo American, BHP Billiton & Glencore] and the two families from the community of Roche whose resettlement was still pending, reached an agreement on October 2nd that will allow significant progress in their resettlement process. The agreement consisted in defining the plots of land that each family will receive in order to continue with their cattle-rearing activities, the restitution of cattle lost during the negotiation process, and the establishment of a methodology to assess and respond to specific claims presented by the families. After the agreement was reached, the families accepted to voluntarily hand over the Roche plots during the judicial procedure scheduled and carried out by a Colombian judge…
