Communities seeking economic benefit from mining

Local communities are increasingly seeking economic benefit from mining activities in their regions through equity stakes, infrastructure development, job creation and improving the communities’ ability to supply services and goods, international consulting firm Synergy Global Consulting director Paul Kapelus [says]...There is an increased drive in countries to secure greater royalties and equity for communities from mining companies and to examine how the wealth from the mine can be translated into economic opportunities...Communities across Africa are increasingly learning and understanding their rights regarding mining and economic development, and it is important for companies to understand and mitigate such potential social risks and avoid conflict around the mine, says Kapelus...“Companies are facing increasing responsibilities in ensuring the protection and respect of human rights, which is particularly difficult in areas where even the government is unable to protect human rights,” says Kapelus.
