Concerns that Hitachi equipment has been used in home demolitions in the occupied Palestinian territory and in Israel

In July, Who Profts from the Occupation reported that equipment manufactured by the Japanese company Hitachi had been used in home demolitions, in occupied East Jerusalem and in the unrecognized Bedouin village of Al-Sayyid in the Negav (Naqab) desert. According to Who Profits from the Occupation, the Hitachi model used during these demolitions was mainly the ZX250LC-5 track excavator.

In its response to the above reports, provided to the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre on 11 September, Hitachi states that 'Hitachi’s official distributor in Israel has not sold equipment to the Israeli military nor military-related entities. Nor have we sold the model ZX250LC-5 mentioned in the report in the country. Furthermore, Hitachi’s distributorship agreement in Israel contains a clause prohibiting distributor to sell equipment to entities that may disturb peace. Our conclusion is therefore that the piece of Hitachi equipment referred to in the report has not been sold directly by Hitachi but instead was likely imported as used equipment from a different country. Nevertheless, we are troubled that our products were found to be in use in OPT, without our authorization or intent.'

Both the report by Who Profts by the Occupation and the response from Hitachi are below.

Concerns that Hitachi equipment has been used in home demolitions in the occupied Palestinian territory and in Israel

Author: Who Profits From the Occupation

A Japanese multinational engineering and electronics company, which supplies products and services in the fields of information and telecommunication systems, power systems, social infrastructure systems and industrial systems. Its construction machinery segment manufactures hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders and mining machinery.

As of 2009, Hitachi products are distributed in the Israeli market through an exclusive local representative: C.M.D. Engineering Equipment Supplies Co.

The company's engineering equipment was used during house demolitions in the Palestinian neighborhoods of At-Tur and Beit Hanina in East Jerusalem and in the unrecognized Bedouin village of Al-Sayyid in the Negav (Naqab) desert. The Hitachi model used mostly during these demolitions was the ZX250LC-5 track excavator.

Israel/occupied Palestinian territory: Hitachi response to reports of equipment use during home demolitions

Author: Hitachi

... In response to the concerns related to the use of Hitachi equipment in OPT that are raised in the report, Hitachi would like to confirm that Hitachi’s official distributor in Israel has not sold equipment to the Israeli military nor military-related entities.

Nevertheless, we are troubled that our products were found to be in use in OPT, without our authorization or intent. While Hitachi and other companies in the industry have limited control over the use of second hand equipment, we will continue to use our best efforts-for example through contract language with distributors-to reduce the likelihood of similar events from happening in the future.

Hitachi Group would like to express our deep compassion for all persons affected by the political strife in the Middle East and support a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
