CSR Advisor at Foley Hoag

Foley Hoag’s CSR practitioners advise companies in a range of industries seeking to increase their positive social impacts while avoiding adverse social and environmental impacts and typically approach client work from a human rights perspective.  In addition to Fortune 500 companies, we also advise governments, non-governmental organizations and multilateral financial institutions.

Responsibilities

The CSR Advisor’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, assisting clients in integrating the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights into business practices; providing guidance with respect to security and human rights, indigenous peoples, and land rights issues; and advising clients in the information technology and telecommunications sectors on how best to protect users’ rights to privacy and freedom of expression. The specific portfolio may vary depending on the chosen individual’s expertise and background. The position will require a moderate amount of travel (approximately 15%), primarily to carry out human rights impact assessments in developing countries.

We seek applicants with experience in the fields of CSR or business and human rights, but will also consider candidates with substantial in-depth clinical or hands-on work at a top-ranked law or graduate school. A graduate degree or equivalent experience is required; a legal degree would be beneficial.

Requirements

Other preferred experience and skills would include:

  • Military or police experience or other strong grounding in security and human rights issues
  • Work on indigenous peoples’ rights and/or land tenure
  • Experience in conflict management or resolution in developing countries
  • Strong foreign language skills, preferably Spanish
  • Time spent living or working in a developing country.
