Compares social & environmental performance of the following companies, listed from highest score to lowest: Catalyst, Tembec, Cascades, Norbord, Canfor, TimberWest, Abitibi-Consolidated, West Fraser Timber, Interfor.] In the late 1990s...Canadian companies were the targets of international boycotts by the Sierra Club, Greenpeace and others...[Agreements were reached in 2001 and 2003 with natives and environmentalists over protection of designated forest areas]...Disputes remain, however...over logging in old-growth forests...Producing paper and wood products still generates significant air and water pollution, and [some] companies...have ...paid significant fines for violating environmental regulations in recent years. Employee health and safety is also a concern: At least 23 workers among...nine companies and their contractors have died on the job over the past five years.
