Dead Sea shrinking [Israel]

The Dead Sea is dying, one metre a year...Even the earth around the lake is collapsing...The sinkholes endanger roads, bridges, buildings, while the gradual withering away of the legendary salt-rich water body is to many minds an environmental tragedy...[S]ome people are backing a stunningly ambitious project...[d]ubbed "Red-to-Dead," the plan to transport water here from the Red Sea is...opposed by environmental groups, including Friends of the Earth/Middle East...Starved of its historic supply of incoming fresh water that flows mainly from the Jordan River, and exploited by mineral companies in both Israel and Jordan, the Dead Sea is doing what any other body of water would do in similar straits. It is shrinking.
