Director of Programs at Intl. Rivers

Now we are looking for you as our passionate and strategic new Director of Programs!
The Director of Programs provides strategic coordination, oversight and support to our programs. The Director is actively engaged in fundraising and is responsible for developing donor prospects, managing important relationships and supporting high quality proposals and reports. S/he ensures effective communications and is one of the spokespersons of the organization. S/he will also take on broader institutional management functions both on an ongoing and ad-hoc basis as needed.
The Director of Programs is part of the senior Management Team responsible for the overall management of the organization. This is a regular full-time position based in Berkeley/California or one of the regional offices of International Rivers. The Director of Programs reports to the Executive Director.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
•Strategic coordination, oversight and support of programs, including participation in the preparation of overall strategies, supervision of program directors, financial oversight, and support of program communications efforts.
•Analysis of important developments affecting rivers; active public communication and communication support for our programs.
•Participation in the organization’s Management Team with shared responsibility for strategic planning, personnel, governance, policy development and budgeting.
•Collaboration with a global network of social movements and civil society groups; building relationships with other interest groups.
•Fundraising support for our programs and the organization as a whole with particular focus on underfunded programs, in conjunction with the Development Department and program directors.
•Strengthening of cohesion, communication, understanding and collaboration between
and across programs.
•Oversight and support for work plan and budget processes, ensuring work plan implementation, budget control and evaluations.
•Ensuring that programs follow and comply with organizational policies and processes; support for the professional development of program staff.
•Support for the regionalization process of the organization and the registration of regional offices.
•Analysis and monitoring of safety risks to our offices and staff, support for the preparation and implementation of appropriate security plans.
•A passion for environmental justice and the protection of the world’s rivers, and a strong understanding of international environmental and human rights policies.
•A consensus-oriented management style and at least five years of experience in program leadership and supervision.
•A proven track record in effective international campaigning for environmental justice.
•A strong track record of charitable foundation fundraising including relationship building, proposal development, and grant reporting.
•Ability to speak clearly, write persuasively, and listen attentively. Fluency in at least two of our program languages (English, Chinese, French, Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai) highly desired.
•Experience in managing multiple projects with deadline pressures and competing priorities.
•Experience in financial management of projects or programs, with the ability to build budgets, review revenue forecasts and track expenditure.
•Ability to work collaboratively with other staff, Board members and volunteers.
•Bachelor’s degree; Masters’ degree preferred.
•Ability to travel internationally, and to work some evenings and weekends.
•Authorization to work in the US or one of our regional offices.
