BACKGROUND:

Oxfam America established the PSD in order to channel the creativity, resources, and influence of the private sector to pro-poor ends.  As a rare global development organization with private sector capacity, OA is a leader in corporate campaigning, innovative business collaborations, business and human rights and pro-poor private sector development.  OA has adopted an innovative market-systems approach (MSA) to poverty reduction, which seeks to influence targeted markets to drive opportunities and enhance rights for the poor.  

Brief description:

A unique opportunity to spearhead Oxfam America’s Private Sector growth initiatives and evolving influence as a thought leader in applied social innovation and alliances and partnerships to co-create sustainable solutions to complex global challenges that enhance the rights and opportunities of the poor. As Sector Leader, this position serves as a key ambassador for all private sector initiatives including policy and campaign advocacy, direct collaboration with private sector industry leaders, innovation and expansion of sub sector and cross-sector initiatives, thought leadership forums, alliances with the NGO and philanthropic community, and more. Oxfam America seeks a mission driven leader who embraces complex challenges and whose goal is to make major sustainable impacts through the influence of private sector transformation.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

  • Leads, manages and drives a vision for the PSD
  • Help lead the Policy & Campaigns Division as a member of the Leadership Team (PACLET)
  • Fundraises for OXFAM’s private sector work
  • Ensures the PSD is well integrated in the work of relevant departments and OXFAM International (OI) campaigns
  • Leads or supervises OA’s private sector engagement -- advocacy, collaboration, research and thought leadership
  • Keeps Oxfam up to date on relevant trends, issues and opportunities
  • Help lead and design OI PS engagement and practices including via OI campaigns, country-level PS support, and OI policy development and socialization
  • Be a Thought leader and Oxfam’s voice on corporate campaigns, market systems approaches, business and human rights and other relevant matters

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage and build PSD and OA’s private sector work 

  • Meet and interact regularly with OA executives, boar d members, supporters, department and campaign leaders, country office directors, and relevant OI and Oxfam affiliate staff to build support for a private sector vision and strategy
  • Supervise implementation of OA and OI protocols around corporate campaigning, partnering and fundraising
  • Hire and help mentor new PSD staff, in collaboration with Deputy Director
  • Supervise direct reports through coaching, goal setting, staff development and staff appraisals
  • Develop opportunities for staff development across PSD
  • Working with the Deputy Director, ensure delivery of all PSD planning, budgeting and performance requirements per OA timelines
  • Supervise overall PSD budgeting and spending

Strategic leader within OA and OI 

  • Provide direction and support to
  • Oxfam campaigns, including with respect to corporate engagement, multi-stakeholder initiatives, investor outreach, shareholder activism
  • Oxfam initiatives aimed at reviewing, piloting and developing pro-poor market-system projects
  • Private Sector advocacy tools including community-led human rights impact assessments and poverty-footprinting initiatives
  • Private Sector Research and monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL)PSD regional outreach, support and capacity-building
  • Lead PSD’s efforts to build an OI-focused private sector support center to provide guidance and thought leadership for OA, OI and the broader development community
  • Be a champion for women’s rights across OA and OI private sector work
  • Help screen and develop new private sector opportunities for OA as they emerge
  • Provide ad hoc guidance to the OA President and Senior Leadership

External representative, thought leader, fundraiser 

  • Develop relationships with NGO, academic, corporate, professional leaders in relevant fields (corporate social responsibility, business and human rights, impact investment etc.) and seek opportunities for collaboration
  • Be a leading voice (“thought leader”) for OA’s PS work through writing, blogging, social media and regular public speaking
  • Ensure the quality, effectiveness and proper positioning of OA and OI Private Sector-related communications
  • Actively fundraise for Private Sector-related initiatives by identifying and cultivating potential donors, helping draft proposals, and exploring new lines of fundraising

  • Periodic travel: approximately 40% of time

QUALIFICATIONS & CHARACTERISTICS
 
Required:

  • MBA, JD or Master’s degree in Economics, International Development or related field
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and motivate teams
  • Experience working within complex multi-functional, international projects and teams
  • Ability to work well with all levels of management, executive leadership and support staff
  • A minimum of 12 or more years of experience working with corporate campaigns, market-based approaches to development, corporate partnerships and/or related field
  • Experience, comfort, and success engaging senior corporate executives
  • Experience, comfort, and success engaging corporate campaigners/activists
  • Familiarity and experience with rights-based approaches to development
  • Strong understanding of and experience working with international development community and with a wide range of stakeholders, including NGOs, government, multi-lateral institutions, peer companies, multi-stakeholder initiatives, business associations, and investors
  • Superior research, analysis, writing and high profile communication and presentation skills for a wide variety of audiences

 Preferred:

  • Familiarity with specific industries and issues of interest to Oxfam, including: food and beverage, agribusiness, extractives, big box retailers, apparel, climate change
  • Familiarity with human rights, women’s rights, labor rights, indigenous peoples rights
  • Familiarity with impact investing, social enterprise and/or base of the pyramid work
  • Experience living and working overseas, preferably in developing countries
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Spanish
