Responses by diamond companies to report on abuses related to diamond mining in Cuango, Angola
In September 2006, independent journalist Rafael Marques published a report "Operation Kissonde: the diamonds of humiliation and misery", in English and in Portuguese. The Financial Times and Reuters published articles about the report. The report raises serious concerns about killings, torture, beatings & other abuses by security companies employed by diamond firms in Cuango, Angola, and includes responses by two of the security companies. The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited five diamond companies to respond to the report. The companies' responses & rejoinders to the responses by Rafael Marques are available below. If Rafael Marques or the companies provide further comments, we will post them here.
