- Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners - adopted by UN Economic & Social Council by resolutions 663 C (XXIV) (1957) and 2076 (LXII)  (1977): articles 11, 71-76 and 89

- Basic Principles for the Treatment of Prisoners - adopted by UN General Assembly resolution 45/111 (1990): article 8

- International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 29: Convention concerning Forced or Compulsory Labour: article 2.2(c)

- ILO Convention No. 105: Convention concerning the Abolition of Forced Labour: article 1
