Ecuador: Two Shuar indigenous leaders opposing mining were wounded in clashes with communities and workers akin to EXSA

“Mining creates serious clashes amongst Shuar indigenous community”, 2 July 2018.

On Saturday 29 June 2018, in the facilities of the Inter-Provincial Federation of Shuar Centres, FISCH, at Sucua, a clash between Shuar leadership from different communities and another group of Shuars leading this organization, accompanied by mining workers and people related to mining.  These last ones attacked with sticks, iron rods and machetes the community group, leaving two people seriously injured…Several months ago, FISCH president, Elvis Nantip, has been signing agreements with the Chinese mining company ExplorCobres SA, EXSA [joint venture Tongling Nonferrous Metals and China Railway Construction], responsible of forced displacement of communities in the Nankintz zone, at the Province of Morona Santiago, since 2016.  Due to this displacement, hundreds of Shuar leaders are still persecuted and criminalized.  The company also is a branch of EcuaCorriente SA, ECSA, that operates in the Zamora Chinchipe Province, at the Mirador project and it was also responsible for the eviction of more than 30 families in the Tundayme parish…Leaders of Centres and communities allege that by this non-consulted signature with communities, the FISCH Govt. council would be looking for the destruction and persecution of leaders that are not in favour of the signed agreements to put new leadership accepting mining…
