Enugu Communities Cry Out Over Pollution [Nigeria]

An imminent conflict now brews between some communities in Udi and Ezeagu Local Government Areas in Enugu State and the Nigerian Breweries Plc over the negative environmental impacts on their farmlands, the pollution of drinking water and erosion allegedly caused by improper disposal of effluents from the brewery...The government [Enugu State Government] implored the management of the brewery to urgently address the "denigration and corrosion of the farmlands and drinking water of the affected communities of Enugu State." But in a swift reaction yesterday, [Nigerian Breweries]...denied the allegation, saying it was not true that the effluents were channeled into the Ajalli River. "We have an ultra-modern water treatment plant...we have always kept to the rules."
