Increasing support for environmental, land and indigenous defenders

Zero Tolerance Initiative

Date & Time: 29 July 2021, 3pm BST

The situation for environmental, land and indigenous defenders is nothing short of dire. Every year a new tragic record of violence against these defenders shocks the world. Their rights to life, physical integrity, safety, political participation, and freedom of expression and association – among others basic civil liberties – are continually and increasingly violated.
In the light of this worrying crisis, a wide range of actors, including governments, multilateral institutions, individuals, and non-profit and civil society organizations, have designed and implemented support strategies to further prevent and respond to attacks against environmental, land and indigenous defenders.

However, there continues to be a significant disconnect between EHRDs and these sources of support.

To help bridge this gap, the Zero Tolerance Initiative (ZTI) and the Universal Rights Group (URG), with the support of ALLIED, have developed two important digital tools, which will be launched at this event: The Phonebook, a directory of support organisations for defenders of the environment, land, territory and the human rights that depend upon these; the Microsite for Collective Protection Resources, a library of over 100 reports, videos, guides, and training materials on best practices to effectively protect land and environmental defenders, their communities, and lands.

Participants will also hear about ZTI’s new podcast and the latest URG-ALLIED report ‘Supporting our protectors;’ along with valuable testimonies from international experts, rightsholders and defenders on what these resources mean for them.
