Webinar: Addressing Root Causes of Attacks on Environmental Rights Defenders through Collective Approach: Challenges and Opportunities for Investors

The Investor Alliance for Human Rights and the Zero Tolerance Initiative

Join us on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, 10AM-11:15 AM EST

The Investor Alliance for Human Rights and the Zero Tolerance Initiative are hosting a webinar to inform institutional investors about how they can support environmental human rights defenders. The webinar is co-organized with Global Witness, Business and Human Rights Resource Center, and International Service on Human Rights.

Recent data from Global Witness show an increased level of risk and threats to environmental defenders in connection with agribusiness supply chains such as palm oil, soya in 2019, with a 60% increase in killings of defenders from 2018. Overall at least 40% of environmental defenders killed in 2018 were from Indigenous communities. Investors may be connected to adverse impacts on human rights defenders caused by, contributed to, or linked to portfolio companies as a result of their ownership or management of stakes in those companies. In this context, investors can play a key role in ensuring the proper and effective implementation of policies and procedures in support and protection of environmental rights defenders.

Speakers will discuss the root causes of attacks on human rights defenders, share experiences of Indigenous leaders and provide deeper insight into different challenges of collective protection of human rights defenders. We are very fortunate to have a great panel of speakers for our webinar:

  • Ali Hines, Global Witness
  • Guangchun Gangmei, Asian Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP); member of the ZTI Steering Committee
  • Miguel Guimaraes, Shipibo-Konibo FECONAU, Peru
  • Steven Heim, Boston Common Asset Management
  • David Schilling, Investor Alliance for Human Rights, Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility
