Ghana: Fishermen call for oil, gas sector to incorporate fisheries into environmental impact assessments

'Fishermen in W/R call for holistic Fisheries Impact Assessment', 22 Nov 2014: Fishermen in the Western Region have called for a comprehensive and separate Fisheries Impact Assessment in addition to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for effective monitoring and evaluation in the oil and gas industry...Nana Kojo Conduah, President of the Ghana Canoe Fishermen Council...explained that...more fish have moved close to the offshore oil platforms, and this has resulted in the decline of fish stock...[which] the fishermen depend [on]...for their livelihoods -- it serves as income, reduces poverty as well as serving as foreign exchange earnings; and...a [source of]...sustenance...“Players in the oil and gas sector should put in place mechanisms for fishermen...-- there should be compensation that will sustain the fishermen if there is spillage and their livelihoods are affected,” he added...Madam Rita Yawson, a fishmonger, called on stakeholders in the industry to always involve fishermen and fishmongers in any decision that will affect the fishing industry...
