Global Witness finds Chevron gives funding to US politicians who fail to uphold racial justice despite public comments against racism; incl. company response

On 5 June 2020, Chevron tweeted that "black lives matter" and "racism has no place in America", sharing excepts of messages from company leaders against racism. Chevron was the only major US oil company to make this type of public statement. This follows earlier statements about the company's commitments to diversity and inclusion.

Despite these public comments, an analysis by Global Witness found that Chevron has given over four times more in political funding to candidates with “failing” civil rights grades than to politicians with “passing” grades, as scored by the NAACP's 2019 Legislative Civil Rights Report Card for the 116th Congress. 80% of the members of Congress whom Chevron has contributed to have failing civil rights marks. Global Witness also highlighted that Chevron’s #BlackLivesMatter statements ignore the charges of environmental racism perpetuated against communities of color where the company has polluted for generations and that Chevron actively harms the movement for racial justice they claim to support.
