Gold corporation, Newmont, named as 2009 "worst company"

The U.S. gold corporation Newmont has been given the title of the "worst company" by virtue of being granted the "Public Eye Award", which is presented annually by the Bern Declaration and Greenpeace. To blame for this dubious distinction is Newmont's plan to extract gold from protected forest areas in Ghana...FIAN welcomes the "honor" and demands that the German Reconstruction Loan Corporation (KfW) begins disassociating itself from Newmont's projects in Ghana. "Ghana's forests need protection, not destruction. The people need the fruits of the forests, not the gold from the ground", explains Ute Hausmann, mining expert at FIAN Germany. [also refers to BKW]
