Opponents charge...that the rice could damage the environment and disrupt traditional agriculture. They say companies such as Syngenta, Pharmacia and Pharmacia subsidiary Monsanto know the rice will never deliver on its promises but are using it as a public relations tool while they plot to reap huge profits after crowding out other strains in developing countries.
