Gov. Crist supports better working conditions for farmworkers [USA]

Farmworkers’ advocates described a letter received from Gov. Charlie Crist pledging support for efforts to improve working conditions and meet with growers over a slate of issues from slavery to higher wages as a needed first step. “I look forward to working with you and your organization in the future to advance these important causes,” Crist said in a letter to the Coalition of Immokalee Workers released on Friday... Florida Tomato Growers Exchange vice president Reggie Brown says his group disagrees with Crist’s wish that the association join the wage campaign, saying they “have concerns over the legality of growers’ involvement.”... In 2005, the [farmworkers'] group successfully convinced fast food giant Taco Bell [part of YUM!] to sign an agreement saying it would pay a penny a pound more for tomatoes to help increase worker wages. Burger King, McDonald’s and Subway have since climbed on board.
