This summary document elaborates the duty to protect human rights in the context of commercial transactions, and specifically procurement. It is the first product for the “Government Procurement Project” launched by the International Corporate Accountability Roundtable. With annual procurement of $350 billion, the U.S. federal government is the largest single purchaser in the global economy. Like other mega-consumers, it procures goods and services through global supply chains, and many of these goods and services are linked to serious violations of human rights. Our goal is to incorporate respect for human rights as a standard for doing business with the U.S. government. The “Government Procurement Project” commissioned Professor Robert Stumberg, Professor Anita Ramasastry, and Bama Athreya to develop and release a report in January 2014.
