Greece’s leftist government has taken steps to block Eldorado Gold Corp.’s key mine in the region, prompting a furious response from the Canadian miner and its employees while leaving the project’s future in question...There has been local opposition to this project dating back to the 1990s...a few years ago, a few violent protests broke out against it...Eldorado has argued that the vast majority of the local population supports the mine, and that it would provide a major economic boost to a country that has suffered through austerity and a severe recession in recent years.
