Guidance for 3 sectors developed for European Commission - 2012

UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights -

European Commission's guidance for 3 sectors

 

In February 2012, the European Commission's Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry announced that it would develop "sector-specific guidance on the corporate responsibility to respect human rights...based on the UN Guiding Principles" for the Employment & recruitment, Information & communication technology (ICT) and Oil & gas sectors - full announcement here

The Institute for Human Rights and Business and Shift are carrying out the development of this guidance - see their dedicated portal, which is the official site for the project (includes timeframe information)

Shift and the Institute for Human Rights and Business held a public consultation on draft discussion papers, which closed on 15 July:

- Announcement

- Discussion papers:
    Employment & Recruiting Agencies
    Information & Communication Technology
    Oil & Gas

The project is now drafting the Guidance for each sector.  The following activities are planned:
- early Dec 2012: launch of draft Guidance documents
- Dec 2012-Jan 2013: public comment period
- end Jan 2013: set of multi-stakeholder sector Roundtables
- Feb–Apr 2013: Guidance finalisation, submission of all three Guidance documents to European Commission, publication of Guidance
