Historic Contract Signed by Guatemalan Maquila Workers

In a sudden victory for workers’ rights, the women and men of the SITRACHOI and SITRACIMA unions signed into existence the only collective bargaining agreement in Guatemala’s maquila (apparel-for-export) sector in mid-July after years of anti-union adversity...Liz Claiborne’s leverage over Choi & Shin’s and, in turn, local factory management, was key to enabling conditions for collective bargaining to take place.
