Honduras: Eighth suspect arrested in investigation into murder of environmentalist Berta Cáceres

“Eighth arrest made in hunt for killer of environmentalist Berta Cáceres”, 16 January 2017

The investigation into the murder of Honduran environmental campaigner Berta Cáceres has taken a new turn. Mexican Federal Police officers have arrested one of the suspects…, a 26-year-old former member of the military…A total of eight people have been detained so far...Cáceres was killed on March 2, 2016…The winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize…had made a lot of enemies during her years of activism…Her last battle was…against a dam in Agua Zarca [, which] would have drained the River Gualcarque…Cáceres mobilized the indigenous communities and took her campaign outside the borders of Honduras, managing to get the World Bank and the Chinese public company Sinohydro to abandon the construction project. The Honduran company Desarrollos Energético SA (DESA) was left in charge of the work, and this was allegedly at the origin of the killing…[T]he arrests have not managed to bring any closure to the case… [since] senior figures from DESA are yet to be arrested…

…En un comunicado, Voith explicó que, según informaciones de prensa, uno de los cuatro detenidos por las autoridades hondureñas es empleado de DESA y otro fue trabajador de esa empresa. "Tras un examen exhaustivo de la situación, hemos informado a nuestro cliente DESA de que suspendemos hasta nuevo aviso todas las entregas para el proyecto debido a las sospechas que pesan sobre empleados actuales o antiguos de la empresa", apunta la compañía…Voith suministraba a DESA a través de una empresa conjunta con Siemens turbinas, generadores y tecnología de automatización.

Berta Cáceres murder: four men arrested over Honduran activist's death

Four men have been arrested in connection with the murder of the Honduran indigenous activist Berta Cáceres, who was shot dead at her home two months ago…[Including] an engineer for the Agua Zarca dam being built by Desarrollos Energéticos SA (Desa), and…a retired military officer and the former head of Desa’s security detail…The four men were due to appear before a judge later on Monday, where prosecutors will outline their alleged links to the crime…Rodriguez had allegedly threatened Cáceres just days before her death…Cáceres reported the incident to the authorities, and accused Desa of using local thugs to intimidate her…The investigation thus far has been condemned by Cáceres’ family, colleagues and independent observers…The government has so far rejected an offer by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to send a team of experts to Honduras…
