Honduras: Garifuna people face charges for defending land where Indura Beach & Golf Resort tourism complex is located –Trust Hospitality responds‏

In the 80's, speculation around the value of land in Bahía de Tela, Honduras increased, as did threats and assassinations against those opposing tourism complexes. Currently, members of the Garifuna community are facing charges for invading the land in Barra Vieja, Tela, Atlántida. The land is the property of Empresa Nacional Portuaria. The luxury hotel Indura Beach & Golf Resort, one of the destinations of Trust Hospitality, is located in this zone of conflict. Garifuna people claim that the land is part of their ancestral territory. Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Trust Hospitality to respond to these allegations - response provided below.

Trust Hospitality is a developer, owner and operator of lifestyle and boutique properties in over 22 markets across three continents. At Indura beach and golf resort Trust Hospitality is a hired third party operator. We were brought on three years ago to open and operate the resort. The issue referenced in this article has absolutely nothing to do with Trust Hospitality as it has no ownership whatsoever in the referenced property…As an international firm…we strongly believe in a thoroughly inclusive policy when it comes to the local communities in which our resorts exist.

…Lo que está pasando en la comunidad garífuna es la muestra de la insólita aplicación de la justicia en Honduras…El Ministerio Público, acusa a mis representados de ser usurpadores  de las tierras que supuestamente son de la Empresa Nacional Portuaria…sin embargo los verdaderos usurpadores son ellos y el proyecto hotelero Indura Beach, quienes pretenden despojar de las tierras a la comunidad que las ha poseído desde 1885”, indicó el abogado…En el año 2007, el Instituto Hondureño de Turismo  interpuso…la denuncia…Desde el inicio de los años 80 comenzaron las especulaciones de tierras en la Bahía de Tela, además de las amenazas y asesinatos de los opositores a la entrega del territorio de las comunidades garífunas...
