Human rights abuses and HIV: A role for business?

Discrimination and other human rights abuses are a major barrier to dealing with HIV/AIDS in Asia…[S]tigmatizing attitudes…and discriminatory treatment of vulnerable groups…driv[es] them further from the reach of health services and desperately needed prevention, treatment, care, and support services. Daily harassment and abuse also cause health problems and affect mental health…

…[B]usinesses…have a role to play in ensuring that there is no discrimination in the workplace, promoting diversity and respect and protecting their own staff from infection through education and awareness campaigns…In some parts of Asia workplace awareness and prevention programmes may be the only source of accurate information employees will have about HIV/AIDS. Company leadership in establishing non-discriminatory workplace policies, distributing condoms and providing testing and treatment sends a strong message to governments and other sectors...
