Human Rights Council considers indigenous issues

The Human Rights Council today took up indigenous issues...hearing an introduction of reports by the Secretary-General and the High Commissioner for Human Rights...on indigenous issues...In the interactive dialogue with James Anaya, the Special Rapporteur on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous peoples, speakers said that...corporations should ensure that they did not contribute to violations of [the rights of indigenous peoples]...Speakers asked the Special Rapporteur to describe...how best to engage private companies in the promotion and protection of the human rights of indigenous people...Mr. Anaya said...[m]ore needed to be done for indigenous peoples...to participate in consultations on matters affecting their rights.
