Does your company have a publicly available commitment to respect human rights?

Respecting human rights is included in our CSR Principles [link], Business Principles and Code of Conduct [link].

How are human rights governed in your company?

A help line was established so that appropriate action may be taken when problems are reported, including those involving human rights. General Administration, which organizes compliance committee, manages the internal whistleblowing system and it has both external consultation (lawyer) and internal consultation.  Concerns are reported and managed by compliance committee and reported to board of directors.  Respecting human rights is significant issue to be considered to build and maintain good relationship with local communities in which we operate.  And we set it as one of our CSR materiality. 

How are human rights managed within your company?

We voluntary use the IFC performance standards and conduct the social impact assessments of each project to consider human rights.

What is the company’s approach to the engagement of stakeholders (including workers, and local communities impacted by the company’s activities), on human rights issues?

We held a seminar for employees in the company, and we invited an expert on human rights to speak and had discussions. In the projects, we consider local communities and indigenous people and to examine the effects of our operation, so that we can take appropriate action accordingly.

Priority human rights issues: What are some of the priority human rights issues for your company?

  • Health (including environmental health, workplace health & safety)
  • Workplace diversity / non-discrimination
  • Freedom of association and trade union rights
  • Transparency in payments to governments / responsible tax practices
  • Racial and ethnic minorities
  • Indigenous peoples

Actions on 'other' issues

The RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) was announced for the Australia project, and we committed ourselves to fully cooperate with the indigenous people. Our activities are reported and disclosed annually.

How are human rights commitments and information about how the company addresses its human rights impacts communicated, internally and externally?

Annual Sustainability Report is created and our initiatives to consider human rights are reported both within and outside of the company.

What provisions does your company have in place to ensure that grievances from workers and affected communities or individuals are heard, and can you provide examples of remedies provided?

We established an internal / external help line to receive reports (that can be used anonymously) in our company. We put in place its community grievance mechanism to receive concerns from local communities about our project, and we resolve them accordingly.

Which external and collaborative human rights initiatives does your company participate in, and what is the nature of your involvement?

United Nations Global Compact, IPIECA

Which are the key one, two or three elements of your approach to human rights that been developed or amended since June 2011? Please indicate if these actions were in response to the UN Guiding Principles.

The RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) was launched in 2013. We participated in the U.N. Global Compact from 2011.  We voluntary use the IFC performance standards for respecting human rights and the initiatives are in response to the UN Guiding Principles.

What are some of the obstacles and challenges that your company encounters in implementing its human rights commitments?

Human rights considerations in supply chain management, whether or not they should be clearly mentioned in the contracts, etc.
