Institute for Human Rights & Business publishes list of top 10 business & human rights issues for 2018

Marking International Human Rights Day on the 10th of December 2017 IHRB has published its ninth annual list of the Top 10 Business & Human Rights Issues for the coming year.

In 2017, the focus of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights and the recently-concluded annual UN Forum on Business and Human Rights was “Realising Access to Effective Remedy”... The ongoing debates at the UN concerning a new international legal instrument on business and human rights highlights the complexities involved in making progress on this issue at the global level.

The 2018 Top 10 list is therefore dedicated to this theme and how key actors should be including it as part of efforts to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The list [...] focuses on five key issues where there are significant remedy gaps... [and] highlights five developments aiming to bridge those gaps.

[The top 10 issues are Mitigating Risks to Worker Safety, Remedying the Broken System of Recruitment Fees, Eradicating Discrimination Against Women and LGBTI+ People, Addressing Injustices in Interactions with Communities, Making Big Data Freer and Safer, Strengthening Dispute Settlement Mechanisms Between Companies and Rights-Holders, Creating New Mechanisms to Resolve Business and Human Rights Disputes, Enabling Civil Litigation for Grave Abuses, Removing Barriers to Prosecuting Companies in Domestic Jurisdictions, Developing Greater Accountability and Access to Remedy Through a New International Instrument]
