Japan: Uber Eats delivery workers face dangerous driving conditions, labour union says

Delivery workers for the Uber Eats food order and delivery platform in Japan are being threatened by dangerous drivers, a labor union representing the workers said...

A male bicycle delivery worker recently tweeted a video of a bus driving dangerously close to him, and the union disclosed that he has filed a damages report with the Metropolitan Police Department over the incident. 

The cyclist was riding in a bike lane on a road near Nishi-Waseda Station in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward when a school bus passed very close to him. The bus then stopped suddenly in front of the cyclist, blocking his path.

The bus driver reportedly got out and grabbed the cyclist's delivery bag, telling him, "Ride on the footpath!"...

The 27-year-old worker had experienced dangerous driving in the past when people overtook him or drove close to him...

The school that outsourced operation of the bus posted a notice on its website on Jan. 31 stating, "We put safety first in contracting out work, so this comes as a great shock." It said that the bus operator had told the school that it had relieved the driver of his duties, and that it was implementing improvement measures, including instructing and educating its drivers...

...The union has partnered with the nonprofit Tokyo Occupational Safety and Health Center, and is calling for information through a survey on its website at https://www.ubereatsunion.org/ (in Japanese). Between Jan. 7 and Feb. 5, it [the nonprofit Tokyo Occupational Safety and Health Center] received 19 reports, including one in which a worker suffered a broken bone...
