Jordan: NGOs make a proposal to the government on the protection of agriculture workers

The Anti Violence and Harassment in Workplace Coalition has expressed its concerns about the work conditions of agriculture workers as the majority belong to the most vulnerable groups such as migrant workers, refugees, women from marginalized societies and children. The coalition states that work conditions for agriculture workers in Jordan are far from decent due to the lack of government supervision in the workplaces. In addition, the labour abuses faced by agriculture workers, in particular female workers, have increased due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on health and the economy.

To this end, the coalition has submitted a proposed draft to the Jordanian Government that workers in the agriculture sector be included under the Labour Law. The proposal includes a set of provisions to improve the work environment for agricultural workers and provide them with the necessary protections such as wage protection, health and occupational safety in the workplace and social security, etc. The draft aims at providing protection to all agriculture workers including Jordanian, refugees and migrant workers, regardless of whether they have temporary, short-term or long-term work agreements. It also emphasizes the need to ensure equal rights between female and male workers.
