Karonga residents take mining company to task over pledges [Malawi]

Villagers around Mwabulambo coal mine in Karonga have accused operators of the mine, Eland Coal Mine Company (ECM), of failing to provide the developments they promised in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) the two parties signed. But mine authorities say the delay to fulfill the social responsibility drives have been a result of haphazard production due to the villagers’ failure to move from areas earmarked for mining...[T]he villagers said the mining company promised them a number of development projects, including a school, a clinic and boreholes but nothing has happened nearly two years since the promises were made...ECM Chief Executive Officer, Leon Rademeyer, said the delay in fulfilling the promised social responsibility initiatives has partly been a result of delays by those occupying the land targeted for mining to move. He said by February 2014, half of the stakeholders that were supposed to relocate still occupied land which was compensated for, adding that by May, five percent had still not moved.
