Kenya: Construction industry's failure to build access ramps violates rights of disabled persons, says association

"Builders accused of flouting laws on the disabled"

The Association for the Physically Disabled Persons of Kenya (APDK) has asked Parliament to speed up the amendment of the disability Act to accommodate their issues. APDK’s National Chairman Fred Owoko yesterday said the delay by the lawmakers in hastening the amendment Act 2003 has led to a serious violation of disability rights. Mr Owoko cited violation of the clause in the Act that requires all storey buildings to have a lift or ramp for the disabled. “Most contractors have not adhered to the clause and have continued to infringe the rights of people with disabilities, denying them access to such buildings,” said Mr Owoko...

The Act is currently under review to align it with the Kenyan Constitution 2010, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other international human rights treaties and conventions stipulated in article 2(5) and (6) of the Constitution.
