Korean firms join U.N. Global Compact [So. Korea]

Korean companies as a whole are still far from touting a respectable reputation in terms of social responsibility, but a growing number appear to be seeking a chance at redemption by joining the United Nations Global Compact...On July 2, more than 50 business leaders gathered in Seoul to launch the preparatory committee for the U.N. Global Compact Korea Network..."Especially for the conglomerates, it is not easy to actively join the compact, despite the merits," said an executive at the Korea Federation of Industries, speaking anonymously. "They have labor issues to consider..."...The current list of 51 member Korean companies reflects a huge increase since the 14 recorded in 2006 and includes a mix of public and private enterprises such as Daegu Bank, Daewoo Securities Co., Eagon Industrial Co. and Industrial Bank of Korea.
