Labour probes Woolworths crane crash [So. Africa]

A Germiston shopping centre was served with a notice halting construction after a crane crashed into a shop, a Gauteng labour official said on Tuesday. The notice stopped further construction pending the outcome of a formal probe by the department, labour spokesperson Mishack Magakwe said. More than 20 people, mostly store employees, were injured when the crane crashed through the roof of the Woolworths, at the Golden Walk mall, on Monday. Two people suffered serious injuries. Labour inspectors had been sent to the scene. "[They will] investigate the cause of the accident and whether occupational health and safety standards were complied with at the time of the accident," said Magakwe.
