Andrés Gutiérrez is an indigenous territory defender and forms part of the Consejo Indígena Lenca de Reitoca, Francisco Morazán (CILRF) that defends the Petacón river in Reitoca against the building of a hydroelectric dam by company Promotora de Generación de Energía limpia S.A (PROGELSA). There has been no process of consultation with the community prior to the building of the project. On the night of the 30th January 2018, the military police invaded a peaceful resistance camp that the CILRF had set up and Andrés Gutiérrez was shot and injured. Fortunately, he survived the attack and continues to defend the Petacón river.
