Australia: Bendigo and Adelaide Bank faces union concerns over alleged AI-linked job cuts, incl. co. comment
The Australian Services Union (ASU) has raised concerns that 137 workers at Bendigo and Adelaide Bank face redundancy as part of a broader restructure affecting 299 roles across the bank's Consumer Lending Operations and Customer Care divisions. The union alleges that approximately 445 positions have been "lost or reduced through restructures" since January 2025, with a documented link to artificial intelligence, automation, and technological change. The restructure follows Bendigo Bank's April 2025 announcement of partnerships with IT services firm Infosys and agentic AI company Genpact. ASU SA-NT branch secretary Ella Waters expressed alarm that workers may be replaced by AI, stating: "We're extremely concerned that, in the name of technological advancement, hundreds of jobs are being cut." Workers in Adelaide are understood to be disproportionately affected. A bank spokesperson declined to confirm whether AI would replace staff, saying: "The detailed design for all impacted areas is yet to be finalised," and adding that the bank is "committed to supporting all employees through this period of change, including exploring opportunities for redeployment for those whose roles will no longer be required, where possible."
