Bangladesh: At least 538 workers killed in nearly 400 workplace accidents across country in 2021, survey finds

At least 538 workers were killed in 399 workplace accidents across Bangladesh in 2021, according to a survey report of Safety and Rights Society.

The study...said that 432 workers died in 373 workplace accidents in 2020.
In the second year of the Covid pandemic, many workers could not work for about five months – from April to August – due to various restrictions, including layoffs, but the number of deaths from workplace accidents rose.

The most dreadful incident was the factory fire at the Shezan Juice factory at Rupganj in Narayanganj, where 52 workers were burnt to death.

SRS prepared the report by monitoring 26 daily newspapers – 15 national and 11 local newspapers – from January 1 to December 31, 2021.

Around 138 workers were also killed in construction, 112 in manufacturing, 86 in service and 52 in agriculture sectors.

Road accidents were found to be one of the main causes of workplace accidents that killed 156 workers.
