Bangladesh: Rights bodies call for immediate wage raise for garment workers

Rights bodies for garment workers on Saturday called on the government to form a new wage board immediately and raise the minimum wage to Tk 25,000 for an apparel worker.

They also said that major expenses of the workers such as children’s education, health, medical care and transport were not included in the allowance structure.

Naripokkho coordinator for the Economic Rights Programme, Maheen Sultan ... said that the government should ensure a monthly wage of at least Tk 25,000 for them to live a healthy life.

Bangladesh Garment Workers Solidarity president Taslima Akhtar said, ‘As the garment industry is the top sector of Bangladesh’s exports, the government has to ensure garment workers’ rights.’

She claimed that many garment workers were leaving the industry due to low pay and benefits in this sector ...
